Psychological Disorders
Behavior patterns or mental processes that seriously interfere with one’s life or cause personal suffering
Biopsychosocial approach (to Psychological Disorders)
The study tactic used that considers biological, psychological, and social factors of a patient to study their health or illness
Phobic Disorder
extreme fear of something that is out of proportion to the real danger (Ex. Arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Someone with arachnophobia will throw up at the sight of one)
Panic attacks
An episode of extreme anxiety or period of intense fear
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Extreme and excessive worry over conditions that may last over 6 months
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Uncontrollable and recurring thoughts of having to repeat things or make something “perfect”. Usually people with this disorder repeat things to make it perfect to their liking in order to feel in control of situations.
Bipolar Disorder
A mood disorder where one has severe and quick changes in their mood, ranging from severe depression to mania (extreme energy)
Dissociative Amnesia
An unexplainable loss of memory usually proceeding a stressful situation
Dissociative Identity Disorder
Also known as Multiple Personality Disorder, where a person has two or more completely separate personalities
Depersonalization Disorder
A mental Disorder where you feel like you are seeing yourself from outside of your body, like you are detached from yourself or that things around you aren’t real (feeling like you’re in a movie)
Somatoform Disorders
A mental condition where mental processes can cause unexplainable physical symptoms, often pain. (This doesn’t mean the pain or symptoms aren’t real)
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
A mental condition where a person worries about imagined flaws in their physical appearance. This could be about specific body parts (nose, jawline, etc.) or about physique (thinking they are too skinny or fat)
Anorexia Nervosa
This is when a person is obsessed over how much they weigh and how much food they are consuming on a daily basis
Bulimia Nervosa
This is an eating disorder where people will have episodes where they will binge and then purge (force themselves to throw up & lose weight)
Binge-eating Disorder
This is when an individual is really stressed out and turns to food to cope with all of their feelings
Depression
A state in which an individual is always feeling upset, sad, and hopeless, and also distances themselves from the outside world
Paranoid Schizophrenia
Characterized by auditory or delusions that alter hallucinations that are regulated by the grandeur delusions of persecution or jealousy
Disorganized Schizophrenia
The disintegration of our personalities that include “erratic speech, child mannerisms, & bizarre behavior”
Catatonic Schizophrenia
A type of schizophrenia where the person remains in a random position for long periods of time. The person can’t control the position nor how long it lasts. They might also experience small periods of exhilaration, or imitate someone’s speech or movements.
Paranoid Personality Disorder
People with this disorder tend to lack general trust in others and are often doubtful of others. They tend to hold grudges and won’t ask others for help.
Antisocial Personality Disorders
People with this disorder tend to lack guilt and will do things no matter the punishment or how socially unacceptable it is. They also tend to ignore the rights of others (or be less social)
Avoidant Personality DIsorder
People with this disorder tend to want to bond with others but are unable because they are afraid of the disapproval of others. They avoid getting involved in activities that require personal contact, try to limit the time spent with others, view themselves as inferior, and take personal risks to avoid engagement
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
This disorder affects how people learn, behave, interact with others, and communicate. They might have poor eye contact, inappropriate social interactions, persistent repetitions of words or actions, and Compulsive behavior. They also might struggle with paying attention, and have a limited interest in things.
Illness Anxiety Disorder
People with this disorder tend to have unrealistic fascination with the thought that they have a major illness. They tend to fear that minor symptoms are going to either indicate or lead to something serious
