Health Psychology
Explores the impact of psychological, behavioral, and cultural factors on health and wellness
Stress
The process by which we perceive and respond to certain events we think are threatening or challenging
Chronic Stress
Prolonged stress which can be harmful both psychologically and physically
Eustress
Positive stress that occurs when perceiving a situation as challenging but not overwhelming
3 types of stressors
Catastrophes, Life changes and daily hassles
Catastrophes
Large scale and unpredictable events. EX: natural disasters
Significant Life Changes
Major events in one’s life that require adaptation. EX: marriage, divorce, new job etc
Daily Hassles
Everyday irritations or minor frustrations that people encounter regularly
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Outlines how the body responds to stress
3 Stages:
Alarm, Resistance, Exhaustion
Alarm (GAS model)
Activates sympathetic NS.
Heartrate increases, high blood pressure, fight or flight
Resistance (GAS model)
High temperature, blood pressure, respiration. Endocrine system pumps epinephrine and norepinephrine
Exhaustion (GAS model)
Body’s reserves have dwindled, more vulnerable for illness
Tend and Befriend
Women under stress are more likely to care for others or themselves more and might seek out support
