Unit 8 Lesson 4: Career Goals Flashcards
(12 cards)
Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs)
vocational organizations supported by the US Department of Education that are dedicated to providing leadership for students interested in pursuing careers in a particular field.
How do CTOs work
CTSOs often have chapters at schools with career education programs, and they offer activities, mentorships, skills development, links to real world experience, networking, and confidence-building relationships for students as they pursue their educational and professional goals. There are local and national competitions in career skills, conferences on the state and national level, and many opportunities to meet both educators and fellow students. Scholarships for further study may be available.
The benefits of joining a local chapter of the CTSO are great.
You will get opportunities to develop your leadership and soft skills competencies, set career goals, meet new friends, and participate in community service. You can also apply for scholarships, travel to conferences, enjoy competing with other students, build your resume, and collaborate with possible future employers in healthcare. Because healthcare careers require lifelong learning, participating in organizations in your field will be part of your career, helping you continue to grow and develop new skills throughout your lifetime. Starting with participating in a CTSO, you set yourself up to be engaged and involved in your career, your community, and the healthcare profession.
There are two main CTSOs that help students who want to work in healthcare.
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and SkillsUSA
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) aims to empower students to become leaders in the global health community. Their programs include scholarships, competitions, conferences and many local events. Their events and competitions include middle school, high school, and college age groups, and cover a very broad range of medical professions.
SkillsUSA is a large CTSO covering 16 different career clusters, including one in Health Science.
Within Health Science are career pathways in Basic Health Care Skills, Dental Assisting, First Aid/CPR, Medical Assisting, Medical Math, Medical Terminology, Nurse Assisting, and Practical Nursing. Other career clusters include business, information technology, finance, marketing, and government administration.

Scrubs
Scrubs—the two-piece clothing set of pants and shirt that medical staff wear to perform surgery—are so-named because you have to scrub yourself thoroughly before entering the operating room.
why are scrubs worn
Scrubs are now worn by most patient care professionals to help curtail the spread of infectious diseases. Scrubs are easily washed, inexpensive, and they now come in many colors and patterns.
