Resume Writing Tips
A resume is a powerful tool in helping you land a job. Even if you have no work experience yet, you can still use your education, community service, volunteer and student organization participation as points on your resume. For those with no job experience, a resume that highlights skills and training is perfectly acceptable. You can think of your resume as a way for an employer to get a quick overview of who you are in one glance.
Look at some sample resumes online to get a feeling for the type of information you want to include. Find a template for your resume in a word processing program like MS Word. You will need two copies of your resume: one that looks nice and professional on paper and a plain version that can be submitted to online job applications.
Include your contact information at the top. Make sure to have your full address, telephone number, and email address. The voicemail greeting on your phone should be professional and simple, and your email address needs to be simple.
Describe your experience and skills with powerful language. Include relevant keywords to describe your skills, certifications, and education. These days, computers search resumes for certain words that are relevant to the job, so make sure to include keywords from the job description before you submit your resume. You may need to change a few words on your resume to tailor your resume to each particular application.
Make sure your resume is no longer than one page. Gather three to five professional references that you may include with applications and ask them if they can recommend you for the job. Have a trusted peer or mentor review your resume and help you to polish it before you send it out. Your resume should be a positive, accurate summary of your professional qualifications.
