Unit a part 1 Flashcards
(34 cards)
What is a fluid?
Anything that has no fixed shape and can flow, taking the shape of its container.
What is a slurry?
A mixture of water and solids, which is a form of a fluid.
What are some examples of fluids?
- Dirt and water
- Cement
- Hair gel
- Oil sand and water
How are fluids used in industrial processes?
Fluids are used in processes such as mining oil sands and can carry other materials.
What are the three states of matter?
- Solid: Keeps its shape and total volume
- Liquid: Takes the shape of the container and keeps its total volume
- Gas: Takes the shape of its container and changes volume to fill it
What is condensation?
The transition from gas to liquid.
What is deposition?
The transition from gas to solid.
What is evaporation?
The transition from liquid to gas.
What is freezing?
The transition from liquid to solid.
What is melting?
The transition from solid to liquid.
What is sublimation?
The transition from solid to gas.
What are pure substances?
Made of only one kind of matter and cannot be separated into different substances.
What are mixtures?
Made up of a combination of different substances.
What is a mechanical mixture?
A mixture where different substances can be seen; also called a heterogeneous mixture.
What is a solution?
A mixture of 2 or more pure substances that looks like one substance; also called a homogeneous mixture.
What is a suspension?
A cloudy mixture in which droplets or tiny pieces of one substance are held within another, and its parts usually separate out if left undisturbed.
What is a colloid?
A cloudy mixture in which very small particles stay suspended in the liquid; considered between a solution and a suspension.
How can paper chromatography determine if fluids are pure substances or solutions?
Pure substance fluid travels up one level; solution fluid travels up many levels.
What is a solvent?
A substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution.
What is a solute?
A substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution.
What is concentration?
The amount of solute dissolved in a specific amount of solvent in a solution, written as g/L or kg/L.
What is an unsaturated solution?
A solution in which more solute can be dissolved at a given temperature.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution in which no more solute can be dissolved at a given temperature.
What is solubility?
The ability to dissolve; the mass of solute that can dissolve in a given amount at a given temperature.
