Unit D Flashcards
What charge do metals tend to have
Positive charge
What charge do non-metals tend to have?
Negative charge
What are the properties of metals?
Reflective, conductive. Are generally flexible, malleable and ductile. Solid at room temperature.
Is mercury solid at room temperature?
No, mercury is liquid.
What are the properties of non metals?
Gas, liquid or brittle solid at room temperature. Poor conductor of heat and electricity. If solid has various appearances ( dull/ lustrous- opaque/ translucent)
What is a semiconductor?
A non-metal whose electrical conductivity increases with temperature.
What is an Ionic compound?
A compound that contains ions. Generally form from metals and nonmetals.
What is a covalent compound (aka: molecular compound)?
A compound that contains no ions, and is usually formed from metals and nonmetals.
What does monatomic mean?
Made of one atom
What does diatomic mean?
Made of two atoms
What does Triatomic mean?
Made of three atoms
What does Polyatomic mean?
Made up of many atoms (or just more than one, is a general term and applies to any species of ionic compound).
How do you find the number of neutrons?
Subtract atomic number from atomic mass.
What is an ion?
An atom that has gained or lost an electron and therefore develops a charge.
What is a valence electron?
An electron in the outer ring or „shell“ of an atom. Part of forming chemical bonds.
What is an ionic bond?
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What is a Polyatomic ion?
An ion made from a cluster of atoms. They are covalently bonded, mostly negative, and have an excess or deficit of electrons.
What is an Acid?
A compound that forms Hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. Formula always starts with H.
What is a diatomic molecule?
Two atoms of the same element formed a bond to create a molecule.
What 7 elements are naturally in a diatomic state?
H, N, O, F, Cl, Br, I
