Q

What is a closed system?

A

A system which nothing can enter or leave

In order to have equilibrium, the reaction must take place in a closed system.

Q

What is macroscopic?

A

things that are visible, or on a large scale. It is opposed to microscopic

When a system is at equilibrium, no macroscopic changes occur.

Q

Water is boiling in a kettle at 100°C. Is the system at equilibrium?

A

NO, because the system is OPEN and water vapour is escaping.

Gas is leaving the liquid but there is no gas going back into the liquid.

Q

Some liquid water is present inside a sealed flask at room temperature. Is water evaporating inside the flask? Is the system at equilibrium?

A

Water is evaporating but because it is in a sealed container, the evaporated water is going back into the liquid at the same rate so it is at equilibrium.
