Unit II - Equilibrium Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is equilibrium?
a reversible reaction is at equilibrium when the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction.
What is a closed system?
A system which nothing can enter or leave
In order to have equilibrium, the reaction must take place in a closed system.
What is macroscopic?
things that are visible, or on a large scale. It is opposed to microscopic
When a system is at equilibrium, no macroscopic changes occur.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
an equilibrium situation where microscopic changes occur, but macroscopic changes do not.
How can you create a system which is more or less closed with respect to heat loss?
Add more insulation
How can you create a system which is more or less closed with respect to light?
wrap the vessel in tin foil or paint it with black paint.
How can you create a system which is more or less closed with respect to loss of mass?
Put the system in an airtight container
Can temperature affect equilibrium?
Yes
Water is boiling in a kettle at 100°C. Is the system at equilibrium?
NO, because the system is OPEN and water vapour is escaping.
Gas is leaving the liquid but there is no gas going back into the liquid.
Some liquid water is present inside a sealed flask at room temperature. Is water evaporating inside the flask? Is the system at equilibrium?
Water is evaporating but because it is in a sealed container, the evaporated water is going back into the liquid at the same rate so it is at equilibrium.
