What is the Weimar Republic?
Weimar Republic is going to be the successor of the Hogan, his own dynasty. The monarchy
What problems did the Weimar Republic have and why?
They inherited all the problems, debts, massive unemployment. This new government had to contend with hyperinflation.
What is the Red Scare?
The Red Scares are these post war fears of communism.
What is Mass Culture?
Mass marketing. Aggressive marketing. Professional sports are a part of mass culture, everybody is experiencing these things.
How does the Cultural Revolution of the 1920s affect women?
It gives birth to the modern woman.
What are the causes of the Great Depression? Be able to explain at least one.
When you have a flat growth or negative growth rate after so many quarters it can cause a recession.
What is Mein Kampf and be able to explain at least one aspect of it.
It was Hitler’s autobiography/manifesto, it contained is political philosophy and his plan for German conquest to save them from Jewish people who he blamed for everything.
What are some of the effects on Jews from Hitler’s ascent to Chancellor in 1933?
If you are Jewish teacher or Jewish professor, you will be removed from your job. If you were a Jew that was a doctor or lawyer, those practices will be taken from you.
What is Kristallnacht?
This is intentional destruction of property, intentional destruction of synagogues, homes, et cetera.
What was the Final Solution?
The final solution is the Holocaust, the concentration camps, the death camps, the 6 million dead. That is the Holocaust
What is the Munich Conference and what does Hitler take away from it?
A conference the Americans and British called to create a treaty with Hitler to avoid war but he used it as a stalling tactic.
What is Appeasement?
To let someone, get away with bad behavior to avoid conflict.
What happens at Dunkirk?
The British and the remnants of French troops are surrounded on a beach and were being bombed by the German Air Force. The British get every boat, every yacht, every dingy. If it’s got a motor with it and started ferrying these soldiers over to England.
How was England saved during the Battle for Britain and what was a major ramification of the loss for the Nazis?
They were aided by a cloned Enigma machine. Cloned Enigma machine. The Enigma, this is the Enigma code is the secret code that the Germans used. They utilized Radar. But the British had invested in it, believed in the technology and between the, the radar and this Enigma machine, they will be able to combat. They stopped Hitler from advancing
Why did the Nazis’ lose in Operation Barbarossa?
Russians had more troops than the Germans do. They also ran into some of same issues as Neapolitan with supply lines and winter. The troops did not have adequate clothing. The vehicles were not designed to operate in weather like this causing Hitler to take significant losses.
What is Central Planning?
Stalin has used central planning. He created a series of five-year plans. In the first five years they produced steel, tanks, this many bullets, this many tons of coal. Hitler didn’t realize is that Stalin is sitting on a ton of weapons and a ton of troops
What was the Nye Commission
They studied World War 1, why America had to get involved in World War One. They feel if we weren’t selling weapons the sinking of the Lusitania would have not been a big deal. They determine the Neutrality Acts were required.
What were the Neutrality Acts and how did they hamper US foreign policy?
They were created by the Nye Commission it stated the United States will no longer sell weapons to countries at war or give loans to nations at war.
What three strategies did FDR try to help the Allies in WWII?
- Exchange bases for destroyers.
- Develops the Lend-Lease act where he Lends/Leases hardware to the British.
- Neutrality Patrols to defend our equipment, we will fire on site any German ship coming for our equipment to protect our investment.
What did the Japanese want?
They aspired to create an Asian empire.
What did the US expect at Pearl Harbor?
Most of the American sort of intelligence agencies had believed that there was going to be some form of sabotage
What three “fortunate” things happen at Pearl Harbor that allow the US to remain in WWII?
- The aircraft carriers had been sent out to sea the aircraft carriers.
- The harbor was shallow, so a lot of ships were able to be reclaimed.
- The Japanese did not send their third wave of planes
What is D-Day?
The day the campaign begins. The Allied assault on June 6th, 1944. They will assault France’s Normandy coast.
What is a Cold War?
The Cold War is this period after World War Two is completed. The US and Soviet Union are opposites we call a Cold War because it doesn’t go into a hot war. It is a war of spying, ideas, sabotage, and indirect conflict.
