Units 1-4 Flashcards
Intro, Air we Breathe, Raditation from the sun (45 cards)
What is 0.0000000000235 in scientific notation?
2.35 x 10^-11
What is smaller number? A. 1.1 x 10^-7 B.5.76 x 10^-7
A. 1.1 x 10^-7
Convert 312 pm to nm…
0.312 nm
Convert 4.77nm to A(angstrom)
47.7 A
How does the movement of atoms differ between their solid and liquid states?
Solids atoms are in in a fixed postion. Liquid will allow movement from fixed state.
What is the Achilles heel of glass and is this a chemical or physical property?
The achilles heel is the BRITLENESS of glass which is a physical property.
What is the LEAST dense state of matter
Gas
What is the difference between amorphous or crystalline substance?
Crystalline will have an ordered array of molecules that repeats; amorphous is random, disordered arrangement of atoms
Is blood : a. substnace b. solution c.heterogenuos mixture d. homogeneous mixture e. element
Homeogenous to naked eye OR heterogeneous under microscope
When the element potassium combines with a nonmetal it loses one electron to form a
potassium ion. Determine the number of protons and electrons in a potassium ion, and the charge of the potassium ion:
K+ –> 19 protons and 18 electrons
List the following for an oxide ion: formula, proton #, Electron #, charge
O(^-2) , protons: 8, electrons: 10, charge: -2
What is an ionic compound? What is cation v anion?
When metals combine with nonmetals (mainly solids w/ high melting point)
Cation: Metal atoms will give up 1-3 electrons to form a positively charged ion ( lost electrons so becomes positive!)
Anion: the nonmetal will gain 1-3 electrons to form negatively charged ion ( gains electrons so becomes more negative!)
What is a substance? What is a mixture?
Substance: define and FIXED composition and cannot be separated into other kinds of matter through physical methods (ex: pure water or Salt)
Mixture: a combination of 2 OR MORE substances (phases) that CAN be separated into substances by physical methods
What can be classified further as a pure substance?
Compound: can be broken down CHEMICALLY (ex: H2O can be broken into H and O)
Element: cannot be broken down any further (ex: H2- just hydrogen through and through)
What is the formula for Barium Sulfide?
BaS
What is the name of Na3N
Sodium Nitride
What is the name of MgF2
Magnesium Fluoride
When are roman numerals used in naming ionic compounds? Think of an example
If the cation can have a VARIETY OF CHARGES
ex: FeCl3 –> Iron (III) Chloride
Ex: Copper (II) Oxide–> CuO
Ex: Copper (I) Oxide —>Cu2O
What are polyatomic ions?
(2/6 examples to know)
a group of atoms held together by COVALENT BONDS that overall carry a charge
EX: NO3^(-1) Nitrate
Ex: NH4^(+1) Ammonium
What is the formula of Lead(II) Hypochlorite
Pb(ClO)2
What are the 2 possible solutions for Tin Sulfide?
SnS or SnS2
What is name of Al(NO3)3
Aluminum Nitrate
What is name of PF3?
Phosphorous trifluoride
What is the formula of FeBr2
Iron (II) Bromide
