Legal aspects of TOP?
- Two registered medical practitioners are of the opinion that an abortion is suitable
- Only registered med pract. can carry out TOP
- Must happen in NHS hospital or approved premises
Which form is used to certify abortion?
HSA1: two doctors must sign
What is a HSA 2 form?
When emergency abortion has been carried out, only require one doctor, can be done retrospectively.
What is a HSA4?
A notification to the chief medical officer that an abortion has been carried out, must be sent within 7 days.
What is meant by conscientious objection?
A doctor has the right to opt out of certain procedures because of personal beliefs or values
How does conscientious objection work in emergency situations
Emergency treatment may not be denied on grounds of conscientious objection

Oral Mifepristone 200mg (anti progesterone)
24-28 hrs later oral or vaginal Prostaglandin eg misoprostol
