What clinical features might you see if the musculocutaneous nerve is damaged during shoulder surgery?

A

It can be injured during penetrating injury to the shoulder (e.g. stabbing) or when surgeons use the deltopectoral approach for arthroplasty of the shoulder.
Features can include weakness in flexion of upper arm and movements of forearm, plus loss of sensory innervation in regions it supplies.

A

It can be damaged at the elbow in supracondylar humeral fractures causing significant morbidity due to loss of motor functions.

A

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause swelling/oedema in the wrists.

A

Froment’s sign which is an inability to hold a piece of paper between the thumb and first finger whilst the examiner pulls it away. This is due to inability to adduct the thumb.
