What is an urban area?
An urban area is a built-up area such as a town or city.
What is a rural area?
A rural area is an area of countryside.
What is urbanisation?
Urbanisation means an increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas compared to rural areas.
What is a millionaire city?
Cities that have over a million residents
What is a megacity?
A metropolitan area with a total population over 10 million
What is a HIC?
High Income Country such as Australia, Japan, USA and England
What is LIC?
Low Income Country such as Chad, Korea and other African countries

Push factors/migration and natural increase
Why do people in rural areas get ‘pulled’ to the city?
People hope for well paid jobs, the greater opportunities to find casual or’ informal’ work, better health care and education
Why do the death rate in cities fall?
Because people have access to:
Better access to medical care
Improved water supplies and sanitary conditions
Improved wealth so improved food supply
What is the meaning of push factor?
Something that can force or encourage people to move away from an area
What is a pull factor?
Something which encourages people to move to an area
What are examples of push factors for urbanisation?
Few services
Lack of job opportunities
unhappy life
poor transport links
natural disasters
What are examples of pull factors for urbanisation?
Access to services
better job opportunities
more entertainment facilities
Better transport links
improved living conditions
What is urban growth?
The physical growth of a city. This can be economic or demographic.
What is urbanism?
The idea that there is a certain culture and way of being in an urban environment
What is planetary urbanism?
argues that urbanism is about lifestyle and culture so it can happen anywhere on the planet

Newly Emerging Economy
What is a squatter settlement?
Any collection of buildings where people have no legal rights to the land that they are built upon. They provide housing for many of the world’s poorest people and offer basic shelter
Meaning of super diversity
Diversity beyond ethnicity. A huge range in the country of origin of migrants, language, religion, migration channels and immigration status of individuals
