URBANISATION AND DEVELOPMENT Flashcards
Outline some global trends in urbanisation
In 2007 almost half of the worlds population are living in cities as opposed to only 13% in 1900.
The urban population is expected to grow twice the rate of growth for the population.
What are some push and pull factors?
Push factors are reasons for leaving a rural home such as: natural disasters, poverty, the availability of jobs, lack of services and infranstructure.
Pull reasons are attractions of moving to a city such as: access to education and health, accessible water and electricity, access to western consumer culture.
Outline the modernisation theory and urbanisation
Urbanisation is regarded as wholly positive by modernists as claim it promotes economic growth by providing a concerntrated pool of labour. Cross suggests that cities promote loosening ties from traditional institutions by reducing dependency on community. Therefore, individualistic values are developed that are more suitable to progress and development
What are some criticisms of the modernisation theory on urbanisation
They ignore the downsides of urbanisation such as Hugh unemployment, drug abuse and crime.
The dependency theory claims that urbanisation is different in developing countries as it is not a response to industrialisation. TNC factories tend to be highly mechanised so jobs are not widely available in cities making it likely to sustain underdevelopment.
