what is the renal corpuscle?
a filtering device
what does a renal tubule do?
processes and carries away filtered fluid
how many nephrons per healthy kidney?
over 1-1.5 million
what are the two aprs of the nephron?
renal corpuscle and renal tubule
what are the subparts to the renal corpuscle?
glomerulus and bowmans capsule
what are the subparts tot he renal tubule?
PCT, loop of hence, DCT, collecting duct
what are the three steps in urine formation?
filtration
resorption
secretion
what does filtration do?
removes unwanted substances from blood
what does resorption do?
moves water and nutrients back in to the bloodstream
what does secretion do?
waste ions are secreted from the blood
what is a nephron?
structural, histological, and functional unit of kidney
what does the PCT do?
returns filtered substances back into the blood
what does the loop of hence do?
conserves water and solutes
what does the DCT do?
last ditch effort to rid blood of additional waste products
what does the collecting duct do?
responsible for hormonal regulation of urine concentration
what is the order that nephrons and urine travels through ?
papillary duct
renal papilla
minor then major calyx
renal pelvis
ureter
bladder
urethra
what are the two part of the renal corpuscle ?
glomerulus and bowmans capsule
what does the glomerulus do?
blood enters the capillaries and filter the fluid to make filtrate
what are the two layers of the bowmans capsule?
viceral and parietal layer
viceral layer of the bowman’s capsule
has specialized cells call podocytes that wrap around glomerular capillaries
partial layer of bowman’s capsule ET?
simple squamous
what is the job of renal corpuscles?
unique characteristics to enhance glomerular filtration
what are the three aspects of renal corpuscles
