A

E. coli is typically introduced to the urethra via faecal contamination. The bacteria attaches to urethral epithelial cells via fimbriae and begin to multiply. Bacteria swim up the urethra to invade epithelial cells lining the urinary bladder. they can sometimes ascend up the ureters into the kidneys.
