Q

desdribe the anatomy of the kidneys

A

outer capsule and under that is the renal cortex which is the layer below the capsule
there is the medulla
the helium is where blood and lymph vessels alongside the ureters and veins enter

6
Q

what is the renal pelvis and calyx

A

the renal pelvis is formed by the merging of several major calyses
the minor calyx is where urine passes through
the renal pelvis nd the ccalyses are lined with epithilium to allow the urinary tract to expajnd and they also contrain smooth muscle which pushes urine forward towards the bladder

Q

how much blood does the kidneys recieve

A

the kidneys recieve around 1.2L of blood from the heart per minute

Q

what is the nephron

A

the nephron is the functional unit of the kidney and lies in the cortex of the kidney
the nephron is closed at one end (bowmans capsule)
the nepron also consists of the proximal conculated tube, the loop of henle, and the distal convulated tube

9
Q

describe the formation of the glomerulus

A

the renal arteries enter the kidney and subdivide into arterioles and the afferent arteriole wenters the capsule and subdivides into tiny cappillaries called the glomerulus

blood in the glomerulus leaves the owmans capsulke via efferent arteriole

Q

give a short description on urine formation

A

it is produced by the kidneys and there are 3 ain processes involved in urine formation

slective reabsorption
secretion

Q

what is glomerular filtration rater

A

that is the amount of filtrate produced by both kidneys per minute

13
Q

what is autoregulation

A

this is the control of blood pressure in the glomerulus
if the systemic blood pressure rises then the efferent arterioles will constrict to protect the glomerular cappillaruies

14
Q

what is selective reabsorption

A

selective reabsorption takes place in the PCT and substanes such as water, eletrolytes and nutrients are reabsorbed

15
Q

where are water sodium and chloride reabsorbed

in the loop of henle
water is aso reabsorbed in the collecting ducts

16
Q

where are electrolytes reabsorbed

A

in the distal convulated tube

17
Q

what is renal threshold

A

this is the kidneys maximum capacity to reabsorb a substance
any excess appears in urine

18
Q

which hormones effect selective reabsorption

A

aldosterone
antidiuretic hormone
parathyroid hormone]
ANP

19
Q

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF ADH

A

adh increases the permeability of thye collecting duct ajnd the DCT to water allowing for increased reabsorption.
the osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus monuiter the water content and ijncrease the secretion oif ADH when water content is low

20
Q

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF Aldosterone

A

increeases the reabsorption of water and sodium and increases potassium secretion

21
Q

what is secretion process

A

tghis is when substances too large to enter filtrate are removed from the body by secretion

22
Q

what is the kidneys involvment in water balance

A

the kidneys are in controlk of the water balance between inrtake and output and they do this byt the release of ADH which cointrols how much watyer is reabsorbed back into the body

23
Q

what is atrial natriuretic peptide

A

this hormone is secreted when blood volume increases causing the atrial walls to stretch and it decreases water and sodium reabsorption to increase urine volume

24
Q

what is the function of renin angiotensin maldosterone system

A

maintain sodium and chloride balance and aldosterone secretion

25
Q

what is the function of the ureters

A

they drain urine into the bladder
