Using genome projects Flashcards
(2 cards)
1
Q
What is sequencing a genome
A
Working out the DNA base sequence for all the DNA in a cell
2
Q
What can the genome be used for and why is it helpful?
A
In simple organisms e.g bacteria, the DNA does not contain introns. This means that we can easily sequence the DNA and directly figure out the proteome (what proteins the organism makes). This is helpful because they can use the proteins to develop vaccines
In complex organisms e.g eukaryotes, the DNA contains introns and regulatory genes which means the DNA cannot be easily sequenced to translate the proteome.
