Q

What are the uses of radio waves?

A

Radio waves transfer sound and music to radios. Information transfer usually takes place around a city. Radio waves can also be used for long-range communication, communicating with ships, aeroplanes, and satellites.

Q

What are the uses of microwaves?

A

Microwaves can be used for heating food and are generally used for long-range communication.

Q

What are the uses of infrared?

A

Infrared is used in an oven, infrared images are used almost all the time. We use heat from different objects to produce an image. Infrared is used in the remote controls of television, used for short range communication.

Q

How are radio waves received?

A

A metal rod or wire can be used as an antenna. The radio waves are absorbed by the metal and cause oscillations in electric circuits connected to the aerial.

Q

How can we use microwaves for long range communication?

A

Microwaves only travel in straight lines, there is a limit to how far we can send them. The higher we build the towers, the farther they will go. However, we can send microwaves to satellites in order for them to be sent back to the Earth in a different location in a straight line.

Q

How can we use radio waves for long range communication?

A

Radio waves are able to refract off the ionosphere, which sends them around the curvature of the Earth, due to this refraction.
