Using Particles and Explain Matter Flashcards

Q

Particle Arrangement
What are Particles?
Briefly Explain how particle arrangement varies in the 3 most common states of matter?
What are the 3 states of matter?

A
  • Anything that takes up space and mass is called matter. All matter is made from particles
  • Particles vary in the ways that they are arranged and behave. The difference in the arrangement of particles is the key difference in the three most common states of matter - solids, liquids and gases

Q

Particles and Internal Energy
Discuss how particle arrangement change between the three states of matter?

A
  • All particles above the temperature known as absolute zero (-273C) have internal energy]
  • In solids, the particles vibrate in fixed positions
  • Particles in liquids can move slowly from their positions but are always in contact with other particles
  • Particles in a gas move very fast, collididng with other particles
  • Temperature affects how fast particles move. The higher the temperature, particles in a solid vibrate faster, while in liquids and gases, particles move around faster

Q

Intermolecular Forces
What is an Intermolecular Force?

A
  • The forces between molecules are called intermolecular forces
  • The particles in a solid have very strong, attractive intermolecular forces between them, which hold the particles in their positions
  • In liquids, the intermolecular forces are still strong, but not as strong as in a solid. This is why the particles in a liquid are able to move.
  • The intermolecu;ar forces between the particles of a gas are very weak

Q

Differences in Intermolecular Forces Between Solids

A
  • Some solds, like metals, have very strong intermolecular forces between the particles
  • The other solids like paper are not as stron as metals because the intermolecular force is lesser
