using urban space wisely ch 6 Flashcards
(15 cards)
How are the housing problems?
There is inadequate housing supply, high housing prices, and crowded living conditions because many people can only afford small housing units, and the building are close together and has a lack of open space.
What are the characteristics in old urban areas where there is urban decay?
There is a crowded living environment, little open space, few community facilities, buildings which are old and in poor condition, mixed land use that causes land use conflict, and narrow streets leading to traffic congestion.
How is the problem of traffic congestion?
During peak hours, traffic congestion in Central District and at the ‘bottlenecks’ of the main roads is common. It not only wastes a lot of time on travelling but also worsens the roadside air pollution.
Name some types of pollution in Hong Kong that lead to a poor living environment.
Air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, solid waste pollution, and light pollution.
What is / are the major source ( s ) of air pollutants?
Cars, vessels, and power plants.
What is / are the major source ( s ) of sewage?
Domestic sewage.
What is / are the major source ( s ) of noise?
Roads and rails near housing blocks, construction sites.
What is / are the major source ( s ) of waste?
Domestic, commercial, and construction waste.
What is / are the major sources ( s ) of outdoor lighting?
Signboards near housing blocks in old urban areas, where mixed land use is common.
How do we calculate the population density of a place?
number of people / total area = population density
What is the cause of housing problems?
Hong Kong has a small area and lack of flat land + a growing population.
What’s wrong with Hong Kong’s small area of flat land?
Its relief is hilly, about 40% of land in Hong Kong are protected areas and country parks. Due to this, Hong Kong is densely populated and has an uneven population distribution.
What problem does Hong Kong’s growing population cause?
The demand for housing and other land uses is very high. A large population also creates large amounts of sewage and solid waste. Overcrowding occurs because places cannot provide enough space for people to live.
How was the urban planning in the past?
It was poor. The land in many old urban areas is used in a mixed way, with narrow roads. As a result, urban problems caused by land use conflict and traffic congestion are common.
What is the result of our rapidly growing economy?
We need more land for residential + commercial activities. We use more resources and produce more pollutants, polluting the environment. More people can buy cars, worsening the problems of traffic congestion and air pollution.
