What is the uterus?
Muscular pear shaped organ
The site of implantation of the blastocyst and subsequent growth of the embryo
What is the structure of the uterus?
Non pregnant = 7.5 cm long approx
What two parts is the uterus divided into?
The body - upper 2/3 and has two divisions
1. Fundus = rounded roof of uterus
2. Isthmus = narrow part
The cervix - the cylindrical Cana, that projects into thevagina
What is the stability of the uterus like?
No skeletal support
Relies on muscles to maintain to position
What do the uterine tubes do?
Transmit the ovum to the uterus from the ovaries
What are fimbrae
Finger like structures at the ends of the tubes that waft released ovum into the open end of the tube
What do the cilia do in the uterine tubes
Line the tubes and aid movement of ovaries into the uterus
Where does fertilisation occur?
In the uterine tubes
