What is the main idea of utilitarianism

A

Jeremy. BEntham the father of utilitarianism argued that :
Actions should be judged right or wrong to the extent that they decrease or increase human well-being or utility in that situation. Actions and right if they reduce the greatest amount of pleasure or happiness for the greatest number of people affected by the actions

How is this measured

A

Intensity’s- how intense pleasure or pain
Duration - how long it lasts
Certainty - how likely pleasure or pain will concur
Proximity - how soon it will be experienced
Fecundity - likelihood action leads to further pain or pleasure
Purity - likelihood action leads to mixed consequences
Extent - how many people affected by action

What was another idea of utilitarianism

A

J.S Mills believe their was a quality issue - “better Socrates dissatisfied than a pig satisfied”

Humans have a lot more to give than a pig, no matter how’s intelligent, smart or cute a pig may be; a human should always be able to surpass this .

This created higher and lower pleasures.
