Q

Jesus example

A

when E directed man to engage in acts of service, he made us of the delusional thinking in a way that a new self-concept could emerge. Rather than being ridiculed or marginalized for his delusional thinking, man put in position of being appreciated by doctors at hospital who enjoyed tennis, bookcase he built; handiwork represented something good that had come from inside of his and from work of his hands, self image changed to reflect greater value, power of delusional thinking faded as real life rewards became available

Q

Simple bind

A

you want X, so do Y
fulfillment of a strong desire made contingent on development of problem-solving behaviors
-recognizing what person WANTS and linking that to therapeutic outcome

EX: spinach story: erickson’s children wanted to be bigger and older, so they responded to the bind by sitting in the chair as tall as possible, E would give in, express doubts, and give the smallest bite

EX: couple who wanted an abortion “don’t name your unborn child”–utilization of couple’s refusal to heed E’s advice–> a more profound bind: if you have a name for a baby, you have to have a baby to give it to

EX: woman who wanted to waste time: Erickson recognized that her desired outcome was to improve in her overall condition, and so he linked that to a therapeutic outcome of “paying” for her “manipulation” of him; he didn’t try to change her point of view or attitudes about it, but rather accepted them and used them in her intervention to kickstart her into working on improving. By doing this, and then making her “pay” by continuing to gradually improve, the client started to recognize their goodness

Q

Double bind example: Man with insomnia

A

acknowledgment of personality pattern, which was oriented towards self-punishment (that was one problem). Not sleeping was the other problem. E established a contingency that enabled the man to punish himself constructively at any time he wanted. Desire to punish himself was made useful and the insomnia was made useful. No matter what direction he turned, he was bound to succeed.

Q

Double bind: Johnny the bedwetter

A

gave Johnny a different view of his body (in double binds you present new understandings and new ideas and you relate them in some way to the indisputable future)–> Johnny was going to get older, he would get taller, he would get heavier, he would go to hs, he would go to college–> went home thinking “will I be a football player” rather than “will i wet the bed tn”

continued progress in therapy rested on probably that he would search for an answer to ? “which night”

Q

Utilization of a minor problem

A

after pt successfully overcome a small task, confidence see themselves as having certain traits that are capable of healing and taking on larger/complex issues

EX: girl who was failing in math, reading, and writing, also socially and withdrawing: (girl had been academically good a few years prior, but less successful on playground)–taught her how to play jacks, roller skate, and jump rope–girl became school champ in jacks and jumping rope, scholastic work improved similarly

**E utilized other areas in which teh girls suffered from performance anxiety and created an expectation of accomplishment. Initial success she experienced w E created a new self image that generalized to other areas of her life
