What is the Mucosa of the Vagina lined with?
Non-keratinizing squamous epithelium
What is Adenosis
It is a focal persistence of columnar epithelium in the upper vagina. Normal development squamous epithelium lower 1/3 ( derived from urogenital sinus) and replaces columnar of 2/3 (derived from Mullerian ducts)
What causes increased risk for Adenosis
Women exposed to DES in utero
What is it called when you see malignant proliferation of glands with clear cytoplasm?
Clear cell Adenocarcinoma
What is Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma
Malignant mesenchymal proliferation of immature skeletal muscle.
What is the age group you would see Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcome? How would it look
Usually in children less than 5 years of age. Presents as bleeding and a grape like mass protruding from the vagina or penis
What is the main type of cell and what do you look for with this cell?
Rhabdomyoblast and you look for cross-striations and postive for immunohistochemical staining for desmin and myogenin
What cells does vaginal carcinoma arise from?
squamous epithelium usually due to hpv
