Validity Flashcards

1
Q

What are the three types of external validity and what are they?

A

1) Ecological validity = Finding that can be generalised beyond the settings of the study to other real life settings

2) Population validity = Finding that can be generalised beyond same beyond target population

3) Temporal validity = Extent which findings remain over time and can be generalised to other time periods

3
Q

How to conduct face validity

A
  • Independent psychologist in the same field looks at experimental conditions to see is they look like they measure what to intend
  • If the research says yes it has a face validity

Q

What is internal validity?

Q

What is concurrent validity?

A

Comparing the results of a new test with the results from another similar test which has already been established for validity using a stats test.

Q

Face validity on observations procedure?

A

Quickest more superficial way for assessing validity. Independent psychologist in the same fields look at behaviour categories to see if it’s measuring what it claims at first sight. If yes the observation is valid.

Q

Concurrent validity on observations?

A

Compare results of new observation with the results from a pre existing observation that is already been established as valid. Correlate the two sets of results with an appropriate stats test which should exceed +0.8. If results are similar than we assume it’s valid.

Q

How to improve validity of observations?

A

1) Ensure behaviour categories are operationalised
2) Observers trained on behaviour categories
3) Covert observations as ppts are more likely to be natural
