What is meant by reliability
The extent to which something is consistent
Reliable methodologies
They produce the same/ very similar results each time theyre used by a particular sample of individuals
Reliable effects
They are replicated across a number of different studies and individuals
Split half method
Measure of internal reliability
-split into two parts
-participants complete both parts
-test strength of correlation
What is test- retest reliability
Measures test consistency of the reliability of a test measured over rime if the results achieve a correlation co-efficient of 0.8 + its reliable. Measures external reliability
What is inter-rater reliability
The degree of agreement among raters. If theres a high correlation (0.8+) between observers/ rater, the measure is reliable. Measures external reliability
What does validity mean
The extent to which something is measuring what it is claiming to measure.
Valid methodologies
Measure the construct that they’re intended to measure
Valid effects
Can be attributed to the IV i.e they arent produced by confounding variables
Participants variables
The differances between the participants
Situational variables
Features of the experimental situation
Construct validity
The degree to which a test measures what is claims to be measuring
Predictive validity
The degree to which a test actually predicts a criterion that will occur in the future
Generalisations
They focus on the similarities between humans and take a nomothetic approach to psychology
