Variations Flashcards
(16 cards)
Where is DNA found in a cell
The centre of a nucleus
What is found within a chromosome
Genes
What is inherited variation
Differences between organisms passed to offspring by their parents in reproduction
What is environmental variation
Differences between organisms caused by environmental factors
What are environmental factors that contribute to environmental variation
Things in an environment that can change an organism
What is continuous variation
Variations between individuals of a population in a character or trait in which the differences are slight. There are no distinct categories, quantitative, controlled by a lot of genes and strongly influenced by the environment
What is discontinuous variation
This is wheee individuals fall into a number of distinct classes. It is qualitative, controlled less by events and unaffected by environmental
What is DNA
The genetic code which makes up genes, which are responsible for giving an organism a specific characteristic from parent to offspring.
What does DNA stand for
Deoxyribonucleic acid
Everyone’s DNA is unique except whose
Identical twins
How does DNA help police
In forensic science, any part of the body that is left in a crime scene, such as a hair strand or blood, can be traced back to a person through their DNA. It is especially helpful as DNA can last thousands of years
What is the structure of DNA
It is a chemical made of two long strands arranged in a spiral. This is called the double helix structure. DNA is made from four base pairs, made from bases: A, T, G and C. A is always bound on a separate strand to T and G with C through weak chemical hydrogen bonds.
What does the DNA base A stand for
Adenine
What does the DNA base T stand for
Thymine
What does the DNA base G stand for
Guanine
What does the DNA base C stand for
Cytosine
