Vertabral Column Flashcards
(10 cards)
Movements of the VC ( vertebral column ) 4 actions
1) flexion of VC - bending forward
2) extension if VC - coming back up
3) lateral flexion of VC - side to side
4) rotation of VC - twist
Extensor muscles are
• Posterior to your vertebral column
Extensor muscles of the VC -
- true back muscles
- the extensor muscles of the VC form a common group. All these muscles arise from a common embryonic mass that is situated on the posterior
4 muscle groups of the VC
1) spinotransversealis - group
• splenius capitis - muscle
• splenius cervicis - muscle
2) erector spinae - group
• iliocostalis - muscle
• longissimus - muscle
• spinalis - muscle
3 ) transversospinalis - group
• semispinalis - muscle
• multifidus - muscle
4) suboccipital - group
2 muscles in the spinotransversealis group …
1) Splenius capitis • strap like muscle • very superficial • from spinous process to head • extend head and neck
2) splenius cervicis • strap like muscle • spinous process to the neck • extend and rotates the neck • lateral flexion of the neck
3 muscles of the erector spinae group ..
I
L
S
1) iliocostalis • ropy, strap like muscle • most lateral • thick and powerful at lateral spine • tendinous at sacral region • extion of the VC • stabilize VC
2) longissimus • between iliocostalis and spinalis • mass of muscle begins at L3 • extension of VC and head • rotate head and neck to same side
3) spinalis
• most medial
• superior part of the muscle is found in the laminate groove
• extension of the VC and head
•rotate head, neck and VC to opposite side
2 muscles of the transversospinalis group
1) semispinalis
• transverse process to superior process
• extends head and VC
• week rotation yo opposite side
2) multifidus • lies deep to semispinalis • between sacrum and C2 (axis) • very thick in lumbar region • powerful extensor in lumbar spine • offers support in VC • increase proprioceptive monitors of VC • tells brain where spinal column is
Suboccipital group
- small group of muscles that attach between occipital bone and atlas/axis
- extends head
- rotates head
- fine tuned movements of the head and eyes
- deepest group of the extensor muscles
5 Muscles that attach to the head
1) splenius captis
2) longissimus
3) spinalis
4) semispinalis
5) suboccipital
8 parts of the vertebral
1) vertebral body
2) transverse process
3) spinous process
4) lamina
5) pedicle
6) vertabral foramen
7) intervertebral foramen
8) facets
