VI. Chapter 6 Flashcards
(26 cards)
Coronary Circulation
Provides oxygen to the parts of the heart
Pulmonary Circulation
Transports blood between heart and lungs
Systemic Circulation
Blood flow between heart and body
Pericardium Circulation
Protective membrane around the heart
Functions
- Carries oxygen, nutrients, and other important materials to each cell in the body
- Removes carbon dioxide and other wastes from the body
- Helps fight off diseases along with immune system
- Keeps body warm
- Transports hormones which send “chemical” message throughout the body
Components of the cardiovascular system are:
- Blood
- Heart
- Blood vessels
Leviticus 17:11
For the life or a creature is in the blood
How many percent of your blood is composed of plasma?
55%
Blood plasma
Yellowish clear liquid
What does plasma contain?
Mostly water, but contains protein, glucose, hormones, carbon dioxide, clotting factors, minerals and blood cells
What’s the job of the RBC (red blood cells)?
Transport oxygen to cells of the body
What protein does RBC contain?
Hemoglobin which contains iron.
What does the iron molecule do?
Binds oxygen and allows it to carry the oxygen to the cells
What makes blood red?
Hemoglobin with iron.
What is the scientific name for RBC?
Erythrocyte
What’s the percentage of your blood that is made of RBC?
RBC makes up approximately 45% of the blood
How many days do RBC’s live?
About 100 days and they take 20 seconds to travel throughout the body
What’s the scientific name for WBC’s (white blood cells) ?
Leukocytes
What’s the primary function of WBCs?
To fight off invading pathogens and to destroy foreign particles in the blood
How many primary types of WBC’s are there and what are they responsible for?
5 primary types and they’re responsible for attacking and absorbing specific things
What’s a platelet and what is it’s scientific name?
A platelet is a type of cell in the blood and the scientific name is thrombocyte
What is the platelet responsible for?
Clotting the blood to stop bleeding when the body is injured
What does the blood vessel contain and what does it do?
They’re lined with special lining that produces chemicals to prevent the platelets from clotting or being activated
What happens if this lining is damaged?
The process of blood clotting begins to prevent excess blood loss
