What are examples of things parents can do to help?

A
  • Talk/ read slowly
  • Use pauses
  • Ask fewer questions
  • Let their child finish speaking
  • Physical closeness
  • Practise turn taking
  • Wait for child to speak
  • Maintain routine (bedtimes ect)
  • Don’t shy away from disciplining their child when neccessary
  • Try reduce pressure on child

What is a way a parent can work out what triggers their child’s stammer? (examples of triggers aswell)

A

The parent(s) can keep a journal or diary of when their child stammers, to spot any patterns.

Examples of triggers might be:

  • Fatigue
  • Household pace
  • Disruption of routine
  • Big events (e.g. moving house ect…)

  • Family history of persistent stammering
  • Being male
  • Poor speech and language skills
  • Sensitive/ emotional personailty
