A

Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mennonites, the Amish, and Quakers are all considered Peace Churches who are opposed to any kind of military service. They were allowed to serve in other ways, however, but in a civilian capacity.

A

What was the Tet Offensive?

A

In January 1968, the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese staged a major offensive on the Vietnamese New Year. There were coordinated attacks all over South Vietnam, against 36 provincial capitals and 5 major cities, as well as the US embassy in Saigon. Many Americans were killed and the opinions about the war began to change.

What was the My Lai Massacre?
On March 16, 1968, American forces searching for enemy troops in an area with a strong Vietcong presence came upon the village of My Lai. Vietcong fighters often posed as civilians and many US troops had been killed by them. A unit began shooting unarmed civilians and 400-500 Vietnamese were killed.

What does the term “credibility gap” mean?
When the public became concerned about the differences between what was happening in Vietnam and gov’t reports.

Why were there anti-war protests?
People protested because they thought the military draft was unfair. Professors and students on college campuses protested because of pacifism, the war’s effect on the economy, and a personal desire to avoid military service. As the war continued on, many Americans began to questions why the US was involved in Vietnam.

What happened at Kent State?
May 1970 – Students shot by National Guard troops during anti-war protest. 4 students killed; 13 wounded – university closed for 6 weeks.

What is the 26th Amendment to the Constitution?
The ratification of this amendment in 1971 lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. This was in response to the Vietnam War and the fact that people thought that if you were old enough to be drafted, you should be old enough to vote.

Describe President Nixon and the Vietnam War.
He made campaign promises to get the US out of Vietnam, delivering “peace with honor.” He wanted “Vietnamization”, which called of the training of South Vietnamese troops to assume responsibility for military actions. He was able to end the war in 1973 and bring American troops home.

He was the national security adviser and secretary of state under Nixon.

What was the War Powers Act?
It was passed in 1973, restricting the President’s war-making powers by requiring him to consult with Congress within 48 hours of committing American forces to a foreign conflict.
