Q

How does Lennie’s and Curley’s violence differ?

A

Steinbeck identifies a difference between someone like Lennie’s violence as Lennie cannot totally comprehend what he’s doing and he regrets it immediately after. On the contrary, Curley from the outset is hostile towards everyone that has a lower status to him.

Q

Why are the ranch workers normally hostile?

A

The ranch workers are normally hostile to others to protect themselves. Due to their nomadic lifestyles they consider it easier to push people away then let them in. This further shows the point that anger and hostility is due to fear. As the workers get to know Lennie and George they discover that trust and companionship is not necessarily a bad thing
