Important to note that…
Age, gender, race, socio-economic status or sexual orientation are not precursors of grooming
Grooming
- Can take place in person, online or both can be perpetrated by someone you know/family/stranger
- Groomer forms relationship that feels like a ‘normal’ healthy relationship
Stages of grooming
- Favouritism
- Gaining trust
- Isolation
- Boundary and taboo violations
- Sexualising the relationship
- Control
Denial
Often denial that occurs during grooming process and when grooming has been uncovered
Signs that someone may be being groomed
- Missing from home or school
- Behavioural change
- Secretive use of cellphones of the Internet
- Unexplained gifts
- Older boyfriends/girlfriends - people being groomed frequanetly identify perpetrators as boyfriends/girlfriends or really good friends
- Suicidal thoughts, self-harming, feeling depressed or unworthy
- Alcohol or drug use
- Sexual health issues
What to do if you have been or think you might be being groomed
- Talk to a trusted adult
- Remember that it is never your fault
