Viruses (week 4) Flashcards
Caspid
outer layer composed of protein subunits
Nucleai acid core
DNA or RNA, single or double stranded; linear or cicular
Bacteriophages replication
Portions of caspid adhere to specific receptor on the host cell
Not easily recognized by host immune system
viral nucleic acid enters cell
once inside, virus takes over metabolic machinery of the host cell
Viral assembly
the components of the virus were produced during replication are organizes into viral particles before being release by the cell
Viral Infections
cause infection and disease in plants and animals (common entry point is respiratory tract, open wounds)
ex. include HIV, Herpes cancer, measles, smallpox, influenza, shingles etc
Emerging Diseases
one that has appeared in a population for the first time, or that may have existed previously but rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range
ex. AIDS, SARS, West Nile Encephalitis, Bird Flu, Yellow Fever, Malaria etc
HIV snd AIDS
spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, mother to child
Influenza “the Flu”
Viral, respiratory, fever, headache, cough, muscle pain, runny nose
mutates quickly
SARS-CoV-2
respiratory syndrome, respiratory illness responsible for COVID-19 pandemic
single stranded RNA virus
Airborne, spreads through respiratory droplets
enters human cell by bonding to angiotensin converting enzyme membrane protein that regulates the renin-angiotensin system
