where a figure is ‘externally present’

what is a famous example of a corporeal vision?
St Bernadette’s visions of Mary
explain St Bernadette’s visions of Mary:
she was 14 years old
claimed to have 18 visions
at first the figure didn’t speak but then Bernadette was given instructions by ‘The Immaculate Conception’ (virgin Mary) that the water at Lourdes has healing powers and a chapel should be built on its site
recorded 69 miracles with no scientific explanation
what is an imaginary vision?
something which is seen in the ‘minds eye’ that strengthens faith
frequently take place in dreams
person who experiences it has no power

Joseph’s dream
explain Joseph’s dream:
Matthew 2:13-15
‘an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream…take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt…Herod is going to search for the child and kill him’
Joseph warned in a dream to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt to protect them from Herod
what is an intellectual vision?
brings knowledge and understanding such as a revelation from God
this type of vision has no image but people claim to ‘see’ things as they really are

explain St Teresa of Avila’s vision:
she saw praying and suddenly saw a terrifying vision of hell
she thought is was to show her the place she would go for her sins
she saw herself confined in hell
