vison and hearing Flashcards
(25 cards)
cornea?
Clear outer covering of the eye
Iris?
Colored part of the eye that protects your eyes from light (changes size to allow more or less light in)
Pupil
Hole that allows light in (looks like a black dot in the middle of the eye)
Lens
Will bend and focus light which lets you focus on certain objects
Retina
t is in the back of the eye. It receives the images, and contains many receptors
Rods
Help you see in low light and black and white
Cones
C for color, they help you see color in bright light
Optic nerve
Connects the eye to the brain, without that vision wouldn’t be possible
Why do some claim that we see the world upside down?
The images that we see are upside down on the retina because the retina is curved. It is flipped when the images go through the optic nerve
Why do we have a blind spot?
Where the optic nerve meets the retina, you have no respirators.
What does 20/20 vision mean?
The ability to see something clearly from 20 feet away that an average person would see from 20 feet away. (average vision)
What does 20/80 vision mean?
You have to be 20 feet away to be able to see something that someone with 20/20 vision can see from 80 feet away
What is an astigmatism?
Your lens or cornea is irregularly shaped
What are cataracts?
When the lens becomes cloudy (because your cat attacks (cataracts) your lens)
What is glaucoma?
A buildup of fluid in the eye that causes increased pressure
Auditory Canal?
The tube that sound travels through
Ear Drum
A thin flap of skin that is stretched tight like a drum and vibrates when sound hits it
Semicircular Canals?
Three tiny, fluid filled tubes in your ear that help you keep your balance
Cochlea
A spiral shaped tube that looks like a snail shell that is deep in your ear and helps change sound into nerve messages and sends them to the brain
Auditory Nerve
A nerve connecting the inner ear with the brain and carrying nerve impulses concerned with hearing and balance
Eustachian tube
Connects the middle ear to the back of the throat that balances pressure
What are the hammer, anvil, and stirrup? What makes them special?
They are the three tiniest bones in your ear, they hit each other to transmit sound
What is proprioception?
Is the awareness of where your body is in space
Briefly describe how smell works:
You have receptors in your nose that picks up the chemical that is giving off and then sends it to the brain
