Vital Signs Definitions Flashcards
(105 cards)
Blood pressure
Amount of force exerted by the blood against walls of an artery
Bradycardia
Pertaining to slow heart rate, less than 60 bpm
Tachycardia
Pertaining to fast heart rate, over 100 bpm
Hypertension
High blood pressure
Hypotension
Low blood pressure
Apnea
Absence of breathing
Eupnea
Normal breathing
Dyspnea
Difficulty breathing
Bradypnea
Abnormal slow breathing rate
Orthopnea
shortness of breath while lying down that goes away when you stand or sit up
Respiration
Act of inhaling and exhaling air in and out of the lungs
Body temperature
Amount of body heat in the body that is a balance between amount of heat produced and amount lost in body
Diastolic pressure
Pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest
Systolic pressure
Amount of force it takes to pump blood out of the heart and into the arterial circulation
Systole
The period of heart muscle contraction
Diastole
Period of heart muscle relaxation
Vital signs
Temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure
Hyperventilation
Rapid respirations that are shallower than normal. Respirations may be more rapid and deeper
Hypoventilation
Respiration that are slow, shallow ,irregular
Cheyne Stokes (Common when death is near)
Respiration gradually increasing in rate and depth and then becoming shallow and slow, apnea may happen for 10-20s.
Hypoxia
Deficiency of oxygen in cells
Pulse oximeter
Device that measures oxygen concentration in the arterial blood
Sp02
Short form of oxygen concentration value
S=saturation P=pulse 02=oxygen
Sphygmomanometer
Instrument used to measure blood pressure
