not toxic to living tissue
Percutaneous
absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes

Colloids
contain large proteins. Cannot pass through capillary membrane.
Common ones are plasma protein fraction, albumin, dextran, and hetastarch
Crystalloids
Primary IV solution. Contain electrolytes but no colloids. 3 classes
Isotonic
equal to plasma. in hydrated Pt no fluid or electrolyte shift
Hypertonic
higher solute concentration than cells. Shifts fluid out of intracellular space and into the extracellular space.
Hypotonic
lower solute concentration. fluid moves from extracellular space to intracellular space
Isotonic solutions
lactated ringers
Normal Saline
Hypotonic Solutions
