Q

Is it permissible to depart with either engine, APU, hydraulic or oil quantities BELOW the maximum normal range when planning to depart on a EDTO flight?

A

No, the minimum fuel and oil to be carried on any extended range operation will include sufficient for the following:

  1. The intended flight considering current forecast winds and meteorological conditions along the expected
flight path including all normal reserves.
  2. Any necessary operation of ice protection for engines or airframe.
  3. Operation of the APU during the appropriate phases of flight.
  4. Navigation accuracy.
  5. Known Air Traffic Control constraints.
  6. Any allowable Configuration Deviation List item.
  7. Must meet the requirements for the critical fuel scenario.

See 3.6.5.1 Master MMEL and Operators DDG/MEL and VOl6A 3.6.6.7 Fuel and Oil Supply - Also refer to Volume 24 EDTO Engineering manual

A

POSI

  1. Performance: Can safely take off and land at planned weight.
  2. Open: Not closed due to curfew or other reasons.
  3. Services: ATC, Lighting if necessary, Minimum Fire Fighting Cat4, Met services.
  4. Instrument Approach Procedure: At least one which can be utilised by the flight crew.

Q

What are the two preflight requirements before an aircraft may be dispatched on extended range operations?

A

1.) Reliable VHF and HF or SATCOM.

2.) Navigation equipment, which will be required to maintain navigation accuracy during all phases of the EDTO operation and conduct any planned approach, is serviceable and checked prior to departure.

Q

May an aircraft depart EDTO without the EDTO destination and enroute alternate aerodromes listed on the flight plan?

A

No, All departure, destination, alternate and EDTO enroute alternate aerodromes must be listed on the flight plan.

See vol6A section 3 .6.6.2 Alternate Aerodromes

Q

Is a flight is permitted to depart without a suitable EDTO enroute alternate forecast ?

A

Yes, providing it does not proceed past the EEP that is contingent upon such forecast until it is obtained.

See Vol 6A section 3.6.6.2 Alternate Aerodromes

9
Q

What is the permissible relevant weather requirements for dispatch required on an EDTO flight?

A

The relevant weather conditions must be above the ceiling and visibility as detailed in Appendix 1 depending on the facilities available at the aerodrome.

See vol6A section 3.6.6.6

Q

If during an EDTO flight and prior to the EEP a planned EDTO enroute alternate becomes unavailable , the Pilot-in-Command must:

A

Either:

  1. Plan for another suitable EDTO enroute alternate, or
  2. Ensure the aircraft remains non EDTO, or
  3. Divert to an alternate before exceeding the EDTO limit of the aircraft.

See vol 6A section 3.6.7.3 Alternate availability

Q

Once the aircraft has proceeded beyond the EDTO entry point and the weather conditions (forecast or actual) at the nominated EDTO en-route alternate fall below the landing minima, may the flight then proceed as planned?

A

Yes, because the aircraft has proceeded beyond the EDTO entry point.

See vol6A section 3.6.6.6

12
Q

When determining a critical fuel policy, does the depressurised fuel calculation work on the basis of drift down or an instantaneous descent? What altitude?

A

An immediate descent from the critical point and continued cruise at 10,000 feet at the two-engine cruise speed to the alternate.

16
Q

Must the APU be running, with the generator serviceable at all times when the aircraft is within an EDTO segment?

A

Yes, this requirement is due to Nauru Airlines not having an in-flight start programme for the APU.

17
Q

When may the APU be shut off?

A

After engine start until leaving the final EDTO exit point.

18
Q

Is a Fuel Cross-Feed Valve check required on an EDTO flight? If so when?

A

Yes, Nauru Airlines has a policy to conduct the crossfeed check as part of the pre-flight procedures and on all flights prior to completing the descent checklist.

19
Q

If an event that normally precludes EDTO operations occurs after the first EEP, may the aircraft may remain EDTO?

A

Yes, because the aircraft has already passed the EEP.

20
Q

Following the failure of a significant aircraft system, (e.g. engine failure), it is a requirement for the aircraft be flown to the nearest suitable aerodrome, does this mean a suitable aerodrome that is quickest flight time away?

A

No, this does not necessarily need to be the nearest in terms of time as many factors will affect the PIC’s selection of the alternate aerodrome. The type of malfunction will have a strong bearing on this decision.

21
Q

What is the acceptable oil consumption rate of the engines and APU?

A

Engine Limit: 0.8 quarts/hr (0.76 Litres/hr)

APU Limit: 0.127 Qtrs/hr (120 CC/hr)

ref: Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) 71-00-00 & 49-11-00

See Vol 24 - (EDTO) - Section 4.3 table 6

22
Q

What is the cruise speed schedule and configuration used to calculate the 60 minute distance for a B737-800?

A

431 knots TAS averaged over 60 minutes with One engine Inoperative (OEI) at 0.82/340KIAS

This equates to 431 nautical miles.

23
Q

If the conditions at the EDTO enroute alternate have a 30% chance of falling below the minimums, can the alternate still be used?

A

Yes, PROB 30% events forecasting cloud ceiling phenomena below EDTO minima may be ignored for EDTO Enroute Alternates.
