Animal welfare act 2006
Welfare/prevention of harm
also deals with enforcement powers and prosecutions
Allows government to make secondary legislation
Provides codes of recommendation - not binding but may be used as evidence in prosecutions

Welfare of animals (transport) 2006
exempt if not economic, to/from vets, pets or farmers transporting own animals less than 50km.
Animal must be fit to travel, walk, no open wounds/prolapses, under 90% gestation or gave birth last week

cervine animals in velvet
can be moved if not too ill, under vet supervision or part of a research programme.
if animals are sick during transport should receive first aid
no sedatives
milked every 12h if needed.
Horses can be transported late gestation if for the sake of improving the welfare of the birthing conditions.
Final responsibility is on the driver or keeper accompanying the animals

type 1 journey is under 8hrs or under 65km (probably more important)

industry injuries scheme. Identify diseases that are risks of given occupations. Suffereres can claim disability. Can be non-infectious.

clinical waste e.g. tissue/sharps/contaminated objects.

Practice has a duty of care to make sure anything hazardous to the handler is handled and disposed of safely.
clinical waste bins must be kept in a secure and safe place.

animal by products or part of them not intended for human consumption.
applied across EU, complicated and picky
Category 1 - specified risk material, Patent blue dye. Whole carcasses or mixtures where some is category 1 are classed as cat 1
Beef:- mesentery, intestine, tonsils
CNS and eyes over 12m, spincal column over 24m
sheep:- spleen/ileum if over 12m spinal cord intact skull and tonsils.
Cat 2
Fallen stock, anything hazardous to human health, containing veterinary residues. Not suitable for animal consupmtion either, goes for incinerations then fertiliser - stained black
cat 3 bits that can go for pet food. Unstained
Pets (cat 1) can be buried at home
Animals under OIE list a control programmes can be slaughetered and incinerated.
cat 2 can be fed to zoo animals
