Vulval haematoma + umbilical haemorrhage in piglets + teeth-clipping of piglets Flashcards

1
Q

What is a vulval haematoma?

A

There will be a ruptured blood vessel in the vulva and this causes a haematoma formation. The haematoma can rupture and the animal bleeds out.
Very common in gilts, due to some injury.

Q

How would you solve a vulval haematoma?

A

The pig should be sedated, restrained and cleaned

use local anaesthesia

use bandage between the lips and behind the haematoma. We then tie it and the haematoma is to be removed after 2-3 min

After the bleeding has stopped, we check the animal every 10-15 mintes over several hours regularly, to check for further bleedings.

Give long acting anitbiotics

Q

If the tying of the haematoma was not successful, what would you do?

A

We need to do more mattress suture behind the haematoma. Sometimes the blood vessel is visible, and if the haemorrhage isn’t stopped we can put a clamp or a suture on the bleeding.

Q

when and why would an intervention in case of an umbilical haemorrhage needed?

A

After the delivery of piglets, normally the bleeding from the umbilical cord stops, but sometimes an intervention is needed. A bleeding could lead to anaemia and eventually death.

Q

How would you intervene in case of an umbilical haemorrhage?

A

We clamp the bleeding.

After a c-section we will tie every piglets umbilical cord, using non-absorbable suture material. We tie proximately 6mm away from the skin, don’t cut the vessels with the suture material.

We cut the cord below the clamp and use tape around the body to protect the clamp, because piglets are curious animals and would want to play with it.

Q

Why do we perform teeth-clipping?

A

If the mother doesn’t produce enough milk, the piglets will fight each other for the milk causing severe infections in both the piglet and the sow

Q

When can we perform teeth clipping, how old does the piglet have to be?

A

We need to wait 6hrs after farrowing for the colostrum to be absorbed.

Q

How do we perform the teeth clipping?

A

We use clean and disinfected instruments and try to prevent cutting into the fleshy parts (tongue, gums, lips).

Do not leave any sharp edges, because then the work will have been for nothing.

We use clippers or grinding machine.
