W02 Flashcards

Record the truths you were able to identify from Joseph Smith’s 1838 account of his First Vision in a journal or in the space provided below. Also write down why you think these truths are important to understand. Come to class ready to share what you wrote.
It seems that in Joseph’s time churches existed to serve the will and purpose of men and Joseph had trouble figuring out where he belonged. Church has been around for a while so Joseph might’ve believed that the right one was buried somewhere in the mess. We discover that there is no correct church. I think it’s important to note that a church exists to serve the will and purpose of God. If we aren’t sufficiently humble to know that, then we end up justifying our own belief system.
How do these additional accounts add to your understanding and appreciation of Joseph Smith’s First Vision? What additional truths could you add to your list from section1 of this material? How has your testimony of this sacred event affected your life?
They are similar enough accounts to testify that he didn’t change the narrative. The use of different verbiage adds more detail. One of these accounts gives an important testimony when the Father testifies that Jesus Christ is his Son. This is important because hearing the other accounts can make one think that he could have been deceived by devils in disguise.
Why do you think the Lord expects you to study matters out in your mind as part of seeking revelation?
The air is free to all but light must be sought out by us. We don’t grow if everything is given to us. Using our agency to plan and make decisions is a God like attribute that He can’t develop for us. We must take charge of our spiritual progress. The other plan would have been Lucifer’s plan to have it handed to us and not think on our own.
Think about times when you have received guidance and revelation. Consider what you have learned from your own experience receiving revelation as well as from your personal study today
Questions that took a long while were answered after I had lived the proper experience(s) that could give an answer. Why does he love me? Which college to go to? What to study? Why aren’t families already together forever automatically? Has all been a journey. Some questions are still in process of being answered. Perhaps because education is a lifelong pursuit.
