Define obesity
Obesity is having a body-mass index equal or greater than 30
What is a BMI not a good measurement for obesity
BMI on,y measures body mass & weight NOT body fat %
Therefore, muscle mass can increase weight = athletes to have a high BMI or elderly to have low weight due to decreased bone density but a high body fat %
What is a better way of measuring obesity
Waist circumference as it measures body fat
Causes of obesity
Energy intake = behaviour, food availability, satiety (hyperplasia or hypothalamic obesity), lack of education on portion sizes & lack of sleep
Energy expenditure= physical activity, sedentarismo & genetics
What is an obesogenic environment
Environmental factors that influence obesity = electric scooters, uber eats, fast food stores & home deliveries
