Q

Assesment

Why and how

A

Clinical: diagnosis, treatment, treatment monitoring and progress.
Research: all of it hing on good assessments, gold standards.

Q

Rct is a group based test
Randomized controlled trial.

Random assignment, not sampling.

A

Equal probability of being in experimental or control group.
So group do not differ markedly.

Let’s us establish cause. Power s randomization, increasing internal validity.

CONSTRUCT VALIDITY. another important component or rct
WHAT AVOUT THE INTERVENTION IS CAUSING THE IMPROVEMENT, compare intervention to. Control group is therefore key.
No treatment, wait list, attention only. Treatment as usual, another effective treatment.

Internal, validity gets higher, external validity gets down.
Very specific population, screening for comorbitidity
Do not generalize to therapy or clinical work. Rct treatment vs treatment of real world. Rct therapists highly trained masters students, plenty of experience. (Manualized treatment)

Making new treatments accessible to clinicians the real issue.

Other disadvantages of rct,
Dropout, esp control group, internal validity soiled. Systematic bias of people dropping out.
Averages used! Nomathetic, individual is quite variable. Better understand psychopathology as some no work.

Q

Interviews.

A

Asking child and or parent about Behaviour, or even teachers,

3 types:
Unstructured, most common, q -> diagnosis
Challenges: less comprehensive, confirmatory biased, and discount other info, jumping to conclusions prematurely. Combine info idiosyncratic ally. Prioritizing symptoms, and availability heuristics,

structured : great for teens, can be done on comp. responding decidedes if clinically significant
and
semi-structured: lots of flexibility in q asked. Vs non in structured, like a questionnaire. Therapist decide if clinically significant.

Improving comprehensiveness: reducing bias,
Shown to be more reliable. More valid.
Standards in Paychopathology, research, but not in CLINICS!
Due to feasibility, too long. 2+hrs
Training, intense.
Hmm, what about music therapy I wonder.

Q

How to make tools more useful and feasible assessments

A

Leads to use rating scaLes,
They much shorter.
No need for interviewer.

Supposedly interview and rating scale just as good, despite misconceptions, leads to same diagnosis, and, work for symptoms too.
Could use charter assessments.

Q

Rating scales and interviews rely on

A

Someone else reporting on child, informants, will not agree though. R is .2-.4
.
Error?
Situation behavioural samples. Rather specific factors, leading to systematic differences.

Rather specific differences or bias like:
Maternal depression more report behavioural problems in kids.

Legitimate differences in meanings of behViour.

Also realize situation specific behaviour. Due to different demand

Informant discrepancies are real and informative.. Differences between people and situation
