all hc professionals has a professional duty of candour this is the professional responsibility to be open honest and transparent with patients when things go wrong
this porfessional duty of candour was agreed in october 2014 in a joint statement from 8 regulators of healthcare professionals in the UK
this was in response to findings and reccomendations from both the MId-Staffordshire NHS foundation Trust Public Inquiry (the Francis Inquiry) into poor patient care at Mid Staffordshire NHS FOundation Trust in 2013 and the UK Government’s response to this inquiry: hard truths : The Journey to Putting Patients First published in January 2014
Be open and honest with ur patients when u have identified that things have gone wrong with their treatment/ care which has resulted in them suffering ahrm or distress or where there may be implications for future patient care.
The National Guardian’s Office for England defines ‘speaking up’ as being abt anything that gets in the way of providing patient care or that affects ur working life.
it could be “something which doesn’t feel right, e.g. a way of working or a process which isn’t being followed, or behaviours of others which u feel is having an impact on the well-being of u, the ppl u work w/ or patients”
the duty to speak up is linked to the duty of candour which is incumbent on all hc professionals and sets out the need to be open and honest when things go wrong
speaking up is wider than the duty of candour as it includes speaking up abt anything that gets in the way of providing patient care, not just being open and honest when things have already gone wrong
there may be some situations where it is necessary to do both, excercise the duty of candour by being honest when things have gone wrong and speaking up abt the issue to ensure that nothing gets in the way of providing patient care in the future
