Wajcman Flashcards

Q

How does Wajcman theorise the Tools for Time?

A

Why do we use digital devices to reduce time pressure, when we blame the same devices for this pressure? This paradoxical dichotomy, that technology either frees us or enslaves us, is not relevant. Devices do offer certain affordances, but they are not inevitable, as their use and relation to time are quite dependent on how the artefacts are embedded in everyday life.

Q

What is the time-pressure paradox?

A

It’s the lack of harmony between the amount of free time available to us, and our feeling of hurriedness.
It’s the gulf between subjective and objective time, as the meanings and values we ascribe to activities affect our experience of time.

Q

How is time multi-dimentional?

A

Time is experiences differently by different groups. e.g. Women feel more time-pressured due to leisure time being combined with domestic responsibilities.

Q

How does Wajcman factor the time-pressure paradox into work life articulation?

A

ICTs have blurred the line between public and personal lives and are erasing time zones and specific workspaces. People increasingly work, but also increasingly play, consume, and interact anywhere, anytime, using laptops and smartphones.
