Walton-on-the-Naze (Distinctive Landscapes) :) Flashcards
name of more resistant (impermeable) rock
London clay
name of less resistant (permeable) rock

Downside of rock gabions (steel cages full of rock) being placed along the base of the cliff in 2017
some of the cages broke open and led to more abrasion against the cliffs

Why are the waves so destructive?
Increased wind speeds due to long fetch means there are more destructive waves.
Name 3 pieces of equipment needed in a beach profile:
- clinometer
- ranging poles
- measuring tape
What does a beach profile show us?
- If the beach has a shallow gradient then it has constructive waves
- If it has a steep gradient then it has destructive waves
- Walton-on-the-Naze has constructive waves
Describe the method of groyne analysis?
- Measure both sides of the groyne using a tape measure and calculate the difference
What does a groyne analysis show us? (Any Naze specific knowledge?)
- A large difference in height indicate that the groynes are very effective
- In Walton-on-the-Naze we found that the south side had more sand and a greater height
What do pill boxes show us?
They show how much the cliffs have retreated since WW1
How did we present the beach profile?
Line graph with a protractor
How did we present the groyne analysis?
a bipolar bar graph to clearly show the difference in height
Evidence that the rip rap was effective?
The cliffs behind it had a steeper gradient (less slumping) and there was more vegetation
Name two positive of a cliff sketch:
- contemporary/up to date
- easy to annotate
Name two negatives of a cliff sketch:
- subjective
- drawing ability
