What was the struggle for empires?
The rivalry for colonies (especially Africa)
They wanted to build an empire

To benefit European trade

The countries got into gangs
There were two power blocks
France, Russia and Great Britain (triple entente)
Germany Austria-Hungary and Italy
Germany and Austria, France and Russia were committed to military alliances
Italy and Britain were linked but not fully committed to the war

Germany thought - Russia would be slow to mobilise
Belgium wouldn’t be resistant
Great Britain will stay out of the war and honour their promise
German war machine will run smoothly

They wanted Serbia to be free from Austria-Hungary ruling
They were lead by Apis

There were uprisings against the Turks who ruled Serbia
They wanted independence in Serbia
When someone joined the black hand gang they had to sign that they would give up their life for the movement

What was the arms race and how did the arms race impact the war?
Militarism: Germany and England fought over weapons and armies
Each country wanted more than the other
This caused conflict
Both countries had many unneeded weapons and armies
The chance of war increased
It was dangerous because the countries felt obliged to use the weapons
Other rival countries wanted weapons as well to feel safe
When this happened Germany and England got even more
The countries were stuck in this loop
The countries ended with many weapons
This left the countries dangerous and prepared
