Water Flashcards
(22 cards)
Sewerage:
a waste pipe that carries away sewage or surface water.
Sewage:
waste material (such as human urine and feces) that is carried away from homes and other buildings in a system of pipes.
Greywater:
any domestic wastewater produced, excluding sewage.
Blackwater:
Water polluted with food, animal, or human waste.
Effluent:
A liquid or waste that is emitted into a lake or sea.
Stormwater:
Stormwater is surface run-off from rain and storm events that enters the drainage system. It carries many pollutants, including leaves, sediment, oil and other hydrocarbons, that are a major cause of pollution in our rivers, creeks, lakes and bays.
Biogas:
gas which has been produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.
Ammonia:
A colourless gas with a very sharp odor. Made both by humans and by nature, ammonia dissolves easily in water and evaporates quickly.
Nitrate
a chemical compound that contains oxygen and nitrogen and that is used in fertilizer.
Disease:
a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors etc.
Faecal:
Related to feces.
Dissolved oxygen:
the amount of oxygen dissolved in a body of water as an indication of the degree of health of the water and its ability to support a balanced aquatic ecosystem.
Biological oxygen demand:
a measure of the organic pollution of water.
Solution:
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances, which may be solids, liquids, gases, or a combination of these.
Ecosystem:
An ecosystem includes all of the living things (plants, animals and organisms) in a given area, interacting with each other, and also with their non-living environments (weather, earth, sun, soil, climate, atmosphere).
Hard Water:
Water described as “hard” is high in dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. Hard water is not a health risk, but a nuisance because of mineral buildup on fixtures and poor soap and/or detergent performance.
Substance:
A substance is matter which has a specific composition and specific properties. Every pure element is a substance. Every pure compound is a substance.
Turbidity:
Turbidity is a measure of the degree to which the water loses its transparency due to the presence of suspended particulates.
Chlorine:
A halogen element that is isolated as a heavy greenish-yellow diatomic gas of pungent odor and is used especially as a bleach, oxidizing agent, and disinfectant in water purification
E.Coli:
A bacillus normally found in the human gastrointestinal tract and existing as numerous strains, some of which are responsible for diarrheal diseases. Other strains have been used experimentally in molecular biology.
Acidic:
containing acid-bearing pollutants? For example: Acidic runoff is poisoning the nation’s rivers.
Alkaline:
having the properties of or containing an alkali.
