Water and its spatial distribution (water lesson 1) Flashcards
Where/What are the 7 places water is stored in?
Water is stored in glaciers, rivers, lakes, groundwater, soil, oceans and seas.
Explain glaciers.
Glaciers are made up of fallen snow that over many years, compresses into large, thickened ice masses. Due to its sheer mass, glaciers flow like very slow rivers.
4 characteristics of rivers
Rivers have natural wide flows of freshwater, they flow into seas/lakes/other rivers. Thesource of a river/stream is the original point from which the river flows, it may be a lake/marsh/spring/glacier, this is where the stream starts.
Define upstream and downstream.
Upstream = Against the flow of river also known as flow of water towards the river source.
Downstream = with the flow of stream also known as towards the river mouth
3 characteristics of lakes.
Lakes are freshwater and saltwater, they are water bodies surrounded by land, and they are larger and deeper than ponds.
3 characteristics (or facts) of groundwater.
Groundwater is fresh water, water found in the pores and cracks of the rocks, and water that is stored underground. Groundwater is a resource we have not tapped in Singapore.
3 characteristics (or facts) about water found in soil.
Water in the soil is freshwater, There are 3 layers of soil, topsoil, subsoil and bedrock, Soil moisture = water stored in the soil.
What is the kind of water found in oceans and seas?
Saltwater.
What is a catchment area/drainage basin?
A catchment area/drainage basin is an area of land where water collects when it rains, often bounded by hills.
